Ria's Bluebird, Atlanta, GA

Ria's Bluebird is a little side-of-the-road cafe you could easily
drive past and miss - and that would be a damn shame. Settled
across the street from historic Oakland Cemetery in a neighbor-
hood undergoing full blown gentrification, Ria's is a culinary
experience not to be missed.

I chose Ria's as my last meal before flying out of Atlanta and I
am glad I did. I arrived after breakfast and just before lunch
and the small parking lot and the smaller restaurant were
packed. It took several passes around the block before a parking
space opened up. Seating inside was at a premium, too, but I
found a seat at the bar.

Ria's has a hip, retro-kitschy ambiance with colorful day glow
knick-knacks and old fashioned sugar dispensers. Sitting at
the bar I noticed plastic bins of whole coffee beans under the
counter - vesuvio, organic decaf mexican and bainbridge,
chocolate, decaf expresso - and teas, peppermint, irish, break-
fast, chai and green. The cup of joe I had was phenomenal.

Knowing I wouldn't be able to get a decent bowl of grits until
I returned south at some later date, I ordered fish and grits
from Ria's whimsical menu. The huge bowl of cheddar grits
came with butter and strips of blackened tilapia on top and,
let me tell you, it was wonderful. The combination of flavors
from the stone ground cheddar grits to the excellently seasoned
tilapia to the crispy baquettes that I slattered with homemade
peach preserves to the sips of bold, robust coffee - well, it was
one fine last meal.

The young, hipster staff was friendly and attentive. My host
and server graciously offered me a cup of their wonderful coffee
to go and I gratefully accepted.

I understand Ria's buttermilk pancakes are the "best in the
world" and I can't wait to try their Huevos, Bluebird Burrito or
their Bionic Breakfast (2 eggs with bacon, ham, sausage with
choice of sweet potato cake, creamy grits or skillet potatoes.
Served with english muffin or biscuit). But, I suspect that if I
lived in Atlanta I might start every day with fish and grits.

Ted's Montana Grill, Atlanta, GA

Ted Turner, Captain Courageous himself, does not get enough
credit. Not only did he single-handedly create cable news, heck
with CNN, TNT and TMC, he practically invented cable (he also did
with Jane Fonda what Sarah Silverman did to Matt Damon). Now,
in addition to all that, he has created Ted's Montana Grill, a new
mecca of hamburger cuisine.

Mr. Turner, is not without hubris. The Turner Building at the
corner intersecting with Luckie Street (and, apparently,
continuing Ted's lucky streak) houses not only his upscale burger
joint but, in addition, the Captain Planet Foundation, Turner
Enterprises, the Turner Foundation and Ted's Montana Grill
University. Alrighty then, I thought as I entered the establish-
ment.

The downtown Atlanta location of Ted's Montana Grill has the
atmosphere and ambiance of an upscale bar - Tiffany lamps,
Hennessy, Knob Creek, Johnny Walker's Black Label visible -
its a Cheers for carnivores. I sat at the beautiful hardwood bar
and a white-aproned bartender presented me with a white cloth
napkin and a coaster for the iced sweet tea I ordered. In addition
to the cloth napkins, Ted's featured flatware - big forks and huge
spoons. When the bartender took my order I had the choice of a
burger made of USDA choice beef or great range brand bison. With
that big honking bison head looking at me from the wall, I couldn't
bring myself to order the bison so I choose beef.

The burger I ordered came with chili, cheddar cheese, grilled
onions, jalapenos and arrived open-faced on a white plate
surrounded by hand-cut fries with the garnishments - lettuce,
onions, shredded lettuce and pickles - on the side. I applied
brown mustard and ketchup before building my personal burger
tower. The meat to bun ratio was ridiculous. When I attempted
to cut my burger in half so I could finesse it, delicious, succulent
meat fell off it with no appreciable diminution in the size of meat
covering my bun.

The burger was incredible and the fries were crispy and delicious.
I saw and wished I had ordered the onion rings. They looked
wonderful - huge and grilled to golden brown perfection.

Now, Ted's is decidedly not fast food. I arrived in the middle of
a lazy Thursday afternoon and there was a looong wait for my
food to arrive. Later, when I decided to splurge and go for a huge
bowl of strawberry shortcake (with fresh berries, real whipped
cream, ice cream and a crunchy homemade shortcake) and a cup
of coffee. The coffee came early but the shortcake came late.
Perhaps this is because everything at Ted's is "made-from-scratch
comfort food that’s never seen the inside of a microwave or a
freezer." I dunno.

Ted's also serves some upscale fare like Fresh Cedar Plank
Salmon, Bison Meatloaf, All-Natural "Beer Can" chicken, and
BBQ Bison Short Ribs (served with the likes of garlic mashed
potatoes, buttered broccoli, squash casserole and country-style
green beans. But, for me, its all about the burgers.

I am fiending to try the Blue Creek Burger (bleu cheese, available
with bacon), George's Cadillac (BBQ sauce, cheddar cheese and
bacon), and the Green & Hot (guacamole, jalapenos and monterey
jack cheese). If I had discovered Ted's on Monday instead of
Thursday, I might have sampled them all by now.

At $11 for a burger and fries and $8 bucks for the shortcake, Ted's
is not a cheap date but, for my money, it was worth every penny.

Johnny Rockets, Atlanta, GA

Johnny Rockets
Atlanta Aquarium
280 Luckie Street
Atlanta, GA 30313
404-688-4114
http://www.johnnyrockets.com/index2.php

I had had a long and eventful day. It had begun at the Dr.
Martin Luther King Memorial where I toured Dr. King's
monument and the Sweet Auburn neighborhood where he
grew up and ended at the Georgia Aquarium where I
explored the wonders of the deep while still on dry land.
As I exited the aquarium I was tired and hungry and what
should I spy across the street - like a mirage in the desert -
but a neon sign announcing a Johnny Rockets hamburger
emporium.

Johnny Rockets is an international restaurant chain that provides
the food, fun and friendliness reminiscent of feel-good Americana.
J. Rocks offers guests friendly service and great food in a fun and
nostalgic atmosphere. Every original J. Rock restaurant boasts
great tasting food from a menu of favorites including juicy
hamburgers, classic sandwiches, hand-dipped shakes and malts.
Guests also enjoy an all-American look and feel, servers who
know the secret behind getting ketchup out of the bottle,
tabletop jukeboxes and authentic décor. Or so it says on the
website.

Now, the fifties weren't very good to my people but Johnny
Rockets did look like the kind of place Richie, the Fonz and the
rest of dem might have hung out. And, being from Milwaukee, that
was good enough for me.

So I stepped through the wayback machine and entered the
retro establishment. I was greeted by a trio of white clad em-
ployees wearing white paper hats. They welcomed me to
Johnny Rockets and offered me a seat at the bar or in a booth.
As I was rolling by my lonesome, I chose to sit at the bar.

The waitress, also white clad and wearing a white paper chapeau,
introduced herself, took my drink order (a cup of coffee, a
banana-strawberry milkshake and a glass of water) and gave
me two nickles to plop into the minature jukebox that adorned
the counter and each booth and table in the restaurant. She told
me this was how the patrons of J. Rocks decide the playlist
of songs heard over the restaurant's sound system. I listened to
That'll be the Day
by Buddy Holly was followed by Heartbreak
Hotel
by Elvis Presley and decided to use my two slugs to select
Oh What a Night
by the Dells and Papa Got a Brand New Bag
by James Brown.

When my drinks arrived, I knew I loved the place. The coffee was
hot and strong and came in a big ceramic cup (with cream in a
metal cream dispenser), the water came in a big grown peoples
glass and the extra thick shake was served in a glass with the
remains in a metal shake container. In addition, coffee and shake
were served with real flatware. Also, there were a old fashioned
sugar dispenser thingee on the counter full of straws. I love straws!

For my meal, I ordered a philly cheese-steak and the half rings
and half fries combination. The half rings and half fries are
a tasty combination and it they were served "with a smile" -
a smiley face made of ketchup. Isn't that too precious for
words?

Now, I have had better everything than I had at Johnny
Rockets - better coffee (although the coffee was "damn
good!"), better philly cheesesteaks, better rings and fries,
and better shakes (okay, the shake was primo!) but never
had I had better presentation, service or ambiance. I even
got an "impromptu" floor show when Donna Summer's Last
Dance came over the sound system. Two of the white clad
staff, one at each end of the bar, did a rousing hand-jive
pantomime to the song replete with dancing disco-lights.
When was the last time you got that at McDonalds?

Now eating at Johnny Rockets was the quintessential
eating while black experience in Atlanta. Like the majority
of the eating establishments I sampled, the managers were
black as were the majority of the employees. When two
of the few white employees were standing around flapping
their jaws instead of working the black manager made an
intervention. That's when I knew I wasn't in Milwaukee
any more.

Also, when I left the Georgia Aquarium and spied J. Rocks
kitty-corner across the street, I began to make a bee-line
there before a white police patrolman straight out of Smokey
and the Bandit and those old Plymouth commericals inter-
vened asking me where I thought was going. When I told
him I was going to Johnny Rockets, he pointed to the cross
walk and told me that is why they (Atlanta) had those new
thirty thousand dollar stop lights (with walk and don't walk
signs). I thanked him and stood at the crosswalk in front of the
street with no traffic and waited for the light to change.

As I was waiting, an Asian woman and two Asian men who
looked like Tibetan monks came up the crosswalk and appeared
surprised that I was just standing there when no traffic was
coming. I looked over at the patrolman who was watching
me and the Asian woman appeared to be explaining the
"walk" "don't walk" signs to the monks - to their amusement.
The light changed, the "walk" sign came on and we all walked
across the street.

Coda. As I was walking back to my car carrying a narrow card-
board box containing my leftover rings and fries, I heard some-
one behind me. It was the traffic cop. "I see you got one to go!"
he boomed in his southern drawl all hail fellow well met. I stared
at him. "Their hotdogs sure are good!"

"Yes, they are," I said.

So good you'll slap your mama!
It made my mouth happy!
Aiight!
Better than dirt.

The first thing everyone in Milwaukee, Wisconsin asked me
when I returned from my brief four day sojourn to the city
of Atlanta and its near environs was "Did you go to Gladys
and Ron's Chicken and Waffles?" Indeed I did. As I was
staying with friends in Lithonia, GA, I went to the restaurant
located at the Stonecrest Mall.

Now if you are going to go to Gladys and Ron's Chicken and
Waffles for what may be your first and only time what choice
do you have but to order the chicken and waffles? So order
chicken and waffles I did. I had intended to order the Mid-
night Special (Four southern fried jumbo chicken wings and
one
Original waffle) but when I discovered there was a special
featuring the two southern fried jumbo chicken wings and one
Original waffle I decided to order that, the catfish basket
(Catfish tenders deep fried and served with your choice of
cocktail or tartar sauces) and a bowl of grits.

The chicken wings and the catfish tenders were well-cooked
but in each instance the seasoning could have been taken up a
notch. The waffle had a heavy, gummy consistency that was
not unpleasant, especially slattered in butter and maple syrup,
but I prefer a lighter, crispier waffle. Still, pulling the meat off
the deep-fried wings was fun and the grits were to die for. You
cannot get a decent bowl of grits in the whole state of Wisconsin
but, from my brief survey, it was near impossible to get a bad
one in Georgia.

The Gladys Knight and Ron Winans Chicken and Waffles menu
is broken up into the following sections: Opening Acts, Headliners,
Waffles, Backstage, Rising Stars, Grammy Winners, Solo Acts,
Side Shows and Encores.

http://www.gladysandron.net/menu_online.html

It was my intent to get back to try the Shrimp & Grits (Shrimp
fried to a golden brown, served with grits and cinnamon raisin
toast with Georgia Peach Butter) but there was so much to eat
and so little time!

Two more things about Gladys Knight and Ron Winan's
Chicken and Waffles: 1) they do not allow any substitutions
and (2) make sure you remove your hat.

So good you'll slap your mama!
It made my mouth happy!
Aiight!
Better than dirt.
